Temporal properties of the short gamma - ray bursts

چکیده
A temporal analysis has been performed on a sample of 100 bright gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with T90<2 s from the BATSE Current Catalog. The GRBs were denoised using a median filter and subjected to an automated pulse selection algorithm as an objective way of identifing the effects of neighbouring pulses. The rise times, fall times, FWHM, pulse amplitudes and areas were measured and the frequency distributions are presented here. All are consistent with lognormal distributions. The distribution of time intervals between pulses is not random but consistent with a lognormal distribution. The time intervals between pulses and pulse amplitudes are highly correlated with each other. These results are in excellent agreement with a similar analysis that revealed lognormal distributions for pulse properties and correlated time intervals between pulses in bright GRBs with T90>2 s. The two sub-classes of GRBs appear to have the same emission mechanism which is probably caused by internal shocks. They may not have the same progenitors because of the generic nature of the fireball model.

A Possible Origin of Bimodal Distribution of Gamma-ray Bursts
We study the distribution of the durations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) in the unified model of short and long GRBs recently proposed by Yamazaki, Ioka, and Nakamura. Monte Carlo simulations show clear bimodal distributions, with lognormal-like shapes for both short and long GRBs, in a power-law as well as a Gaussian angular distribution of the subjets. We find that the bimodality comes from the ...
متن کاملLinearly Polarized X-ray Flares following Short Gamma-ray Bursts
Soft X-ray flares were detected to follow the short-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 050724. The temporal properties of the flares suggest that they are likely due to the late time activity of the central engine. We argue that if short GRBs are generated through compact star mergers, as is supported by the recent observations, the jet powering the late X-ray flares must be launched via magnetic pro...
متن کاملMorphological properties of short duration gamma ray bursts
In this paper, we study a sample of 65 short duration bursts contained in the 3B catalogue. We fit the time profiles of these GRBs with lognormal functions and study various temporal properties. In most of the multi-peaked bursts, our analysis leads to a statistical evidence for the evolution of temporal asymmetry in individual pulses i.e. subsequent pulses in a GRB, on an average, tend to be m...
متن کاملGamma{ray bursts and their sources
Despite of more than 25 years of observational and theoretical investigations gamma{ray bursts are still an unresolved question. In this article we review the current status of observations of temporal and spectral properties of gamma{ray bursts and recent data on their spatial distribution. We discuss also the possible distance scales to gamma{ray bursts.
متن کاملFeeding Compact Objects: Accretion on All Scales
By collecting 17 short gamma-ray bursts with necessary data, we find a correlation of Lp ∝ E .7 p ,i , which is very consistent with that derived from a greatly expanded sample of 148 Swift long gamma-ray bursts. It is argued that the radiation mechanism of both long and short gamma-ray bursts should be similar, i.e., of quasi-thermal origin caused by the photosphere and the dissipation occurri...
متن کاملGamma-ray bursts from internal shocks in a relativistic wind: temporal and spectral properties
We construct models for gamma-ray bursts where the emission comes from internal shocks in a relativistic wind with a highly non uniform distribution of the Lorentz factor. We follow the evolution of the wind using a very simplified approach where a large number of layers interact by direct collisions but where all pressure waves have been suppressed. We suppose that the magnetic field and the e...
